Modern Version of Trade Union

Nowadays, modernization happens everywhere. One of the effects that we can feel around the world is globalization. It is very related to the internet and the advance of technology found in this world. The Trade Unions around the world also get the effect from this globalization. One of the most distinct effect from this globalization is every single Trade Union will have to make collaborations with any other Unions from other countries. There are not only many advantages that they can get from those collaborations, but also some challenges that every Trade Union should face in this globalization era.

The advantages of these collaborations are every Trade Union can work together to overcome the worldwide problems that they are facing at the same time.Butthen the challenges that they might face are how to create formal international labor standards that can cover any needs from any labor union. This is really difficult because every country will have a different perspective on the labor issues. Besides, the global union should also deal with many issues related with the international workers issue. To make the international labor standards, they cannot only depend on specific countries in the world, but then they should consider almost all countries. It will add many colors from different countries when the International Trade Union is made.

This is not an easy task, but also not an extremely difficult situation. One of the solution that can be offered to face this globalization is the creation of global union that represents many labor unions around the world. There are some examples of this global union, such as ITUC (Trade Union Confederation), GUF (Global Union Federation), or TUAC (Trade Union Advisory Committee). Then as a part of helping many Trade Unions around the world to get the similar global trade union agenda, these organizations are now making some collaborations with several international organizations, such as UNDP, World Bank, WHO, and IMF.

The hard work from these organizations finally meets their expectation when they succeeded making collaboration with World Bank, especially with one of their biggest lending company, International Finance Corporation (IFC) on 1990s. As the result, many companies that need to borrow some money from the IFC should meet the requirement of labor standards before they can get the financial support. The project did not stop at the creation of new IFC rules in supporting many companies. The World Bank also announced the extension requirements of the labor standards for any other projects supported by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. This movement is really one of the biggest success of the trade union creating global unions. Because of this movement, many companies should change their policy so then their workers are treated in the right way before they could get the financial support from the World Bank. This is really good for the industry development, because every single company will try for their best in order to fulfill the labor standards, before they can get the financial support. It will encourage many companies to treat their workers in the appropriate way.
